Hi there

I’m Eric McVay from Bangor and recently I was able to attend the Special Olympics USA Games in Florida.  I am a self-advocate and part of the Central Maine Chapter of Speaking Up For Us.

I want to share with you my experience of training and going to the Special Olympics USA Games.

I was able to train at Lawrence High School.  I did a lot of walking for my events as part of my training.  I was also able to practice throwing mini-Javelin.   From August 2021 through March 2022, we worked together once month, and then April and May of 2022 we worked together twice a month.

I won a silver medal in the 400-meter walk, a silver medal in mini-Javelin, and a bronze medal in the 100 meter walk.

This was my first time in Florida, and it was hot.   We had to drink a lot of water to keep hydrated.
We were able to have fun while we were there.   We were able to go the Magic Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom.  I enjoyed the sightseeing aspect of the trip.  I was able to use my self-advocacy skills with Special Olympics for traveling to and from the Jetport in Portland Maine.
