SUFU Members: Enjoy the Outdoors by Volunteering at a Land Trust…

Hi Everybody, SUFU has a great opportunity for SUFU members to get involved with the land trust community.  You might be wondering, “what is a land trust?”  I wouldn’t blame you because I didn’t know the answer until a couple of months ago. A land trust is an organization that helps conserve and protect land. This land can be a farm, or specific pieces of land where people like you and me can go and just enjoy nature or ride a bike.  In most cases…

Incoming SUFU Board Chairperson, Tucker Conley, Wrote an Excellent Letter to the Editor!

Hi Everybody,   Recently, the federal government published a report that said that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services failed to investigate correctly, over 2,600 cases of abuse, neglect, and other bad things, of people with disabilities!  Here are a couple newspaper articles about it, for you to get more information…   (Bangor Daily) http://bangordailynews.com/2017/08/10/mainefocus/federal-audit-dhhs-failed-to-investigate-deaths-suspected-abuse-of-disabled-adults/ (Portland Press Herald) http://www.pressherald.com/2017/08/10/federal-audit-finds-maine-failed-to-investigate-deaths-of-developmentally-disabled-patients/   Tucker Conley, SUFU’s incoming  Board Chairperson was really upset about this and wrote the following excellent letter to several Maine newspapers…   My…

SUFU Members Rock! :)

Hi Everybody, For this blog, I just really wanted to say, “thank you!”  I learn something new in my job all the time.  The biggest thing is that watching you all advocate for your rights to lead better lives, gives me strength on days when I’m not sure I have it in me to advocate for myself. When I read testimony that so many members wrote, in favor of SUFU’s transportation bill, “LD 464, An Act to Utilize Technology to Facilitate Transportation for People with…

A Transportation Bill that the SUFU Board Wrote is Going to be Heard by the Maine Legislature! And They Want to Hear from YOU!

Hi Everybody, Something Very Exciting is Happening!   On Friday, May 5, at 9 AM, in Augusta, a bill that the SUFU Board wrote based on what our membership told us they need to improve transportation services for people with disabilities in Maine (which would also include SUFU Members), will be discussed by the Health and Human Services Committee at the Maine Legislature!  The Legislature helps make laws for the people of Maine. The bill (which is called LD 464) creates something called an “app,” that can be put…

Is SUFU What You Would Like It To Be?

Hi Everybody, We have some exciting things happening at SUFU!  The Sports Chapter is helping so many members stay healthy and have fun, all over the state.  Our new Video Chapter is showing people how to make videos for television.  Local chapters are doing more in their communities than ever before.  We are also working on different ways to attract more people to want to join SUFU and have fun with us! I know that I often send out surveys that have questions that we…

Happy New Year SUFU!

Tyler Ingalls asked on Facebook, “what goals did SUFU Members have for 2017?” I’m making a promise to myself in the new year:  2017 is going to be the year that Avery truly feels comfortable in his own skin. What I mean is, I’m going to make 2017 the year that I really work on making myself a healthier and happier person.  Now what I’m actually going to do about it this year, I’m not completely sure, yet. I do know that we all owe…

Communicating with Other People…

Hi Everybody, A few weeks ago, I was feeling down.  I didn’t feel like I was very good at my job because I felt like I was having a hard time communicating with people and I wasn’t sure what I could do differently. I was asking someone about it and I said, “Should I take a communication class or training?” He said, “You don’t need to take a class, you just need to be willing to try different things.”  I said to myself, “Why does…

Introducing: The SUFU Transportation Fund! :)

Transportation to SUFU events and programs in our communities is a problem for a lot of us because we might not drive or have a vehicle. And busses and cabs can cost a lot of money. Wouldn’t it be great if SUFU Members had more transportation choices, so that we could have the freedom to choose to be more involved with SUFU and our communities? Well… This year, we are doing something different in our fundraising for SUFU. This year, we are focusing on: Transportation.…

Introducing: SUFU’s New Employment Program!

Hi Everybody, Finding a job these days is tough for everybody.  Finding a job when you have a disability like we do, can be just as tough.  Sometimes, even the kindest, nicest, employers might not know that much about disabilities and may think we can’t do the job they need.  Maybe you have been told that you are “too disabled” to work, and aren’t even sure about the kind of job that you would like.  There are some great people who work very hard for…

Respect: What Does it Mean?

Hi Everybody, I hope you had a great time at the conference, I know I did.  I learned a lot of things that really made me think.  One thing that really sticks out to me is something David Unger was talking about.  He talked about how in order to have freedom of choice to live the life that you really want to have, you need to respect yourself, respect other people, and be respected by others.  That really meant a lot to me because I…
