Hi Everybody,

I wanted to start this off with a few questions for the Chapters:

  • Are you enjoying the blogs that I am writing?
  • Are there things that I could do to make the blogs easier to understand?
  • Are there things that I haven’t talked about yet in the blogs that you wish I would talk about?

Please let me know because even though I write the blogs, the blogs are for you and I want to make sure that you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

I also wanted to let you know that we had the 2nd meeting of the Legislative Chapter on Tuesday, November 17.  Robbie Garland, Christopher Heywood, and David Unger attended.  After discussions from our first meeting and this meeting, we decided that we wanted to focus on the issue of transportation.  This is something that we all felt is a real problem for people with disabilities in Maine.

We spent a lot of time during this meeting talking about what would be the best ways to really make some changes as SUFU members.  Talking about our experiences with transportation problems to legislators in Maine is one way.  We also talked about creating legislation as the SUFU Legislative Chapter.     Meaning, we agree on 1 problem that we feel like we have a solution to, and submit legislation to see if we can get it passed in Maine, and help fix the problem that we came up with.

In the meeting, we talked a lot about how there are a lot of times where we don’t feel like we have control to change things that really bother us.  Creating legislations and telling the truth about our lives are two ways that we can have that control.  Even if we fall down and need to start again, at least we know that we tried and can do it again.

If you would like to be a part of making our lives better as people with disabilities, I hope that you will join the Legislative Chapter.  We can really do some good and have fun at the same time.  I would love it if you were a part of it!  If you have any questions or would like more information about the Legislative Chapter, please feel free to call me at 827-1047 or aolmstead@sufumaine.org

Until Next Time,

Avery
